The Leopard Print Gala Raised 1.3M To Set Up Toni Kohn House

The Leopard Print Gala Raised 1.3M To Set Up Toni Kohn House
(Event recap photos by: Binzento using iPhone)
The Toni Kohn Woodward Foundation is a non-profit organization with a mission to support struggling young women by offering financial, educational, social, and health lifestyle management support. The foundation was established in memory of Toni Kohn Woodward, a talented young woman who passed away unexpectedly in September 2014. During her lifetime, Toni had touched many lives with compassion, love and care especially to those in need. Her legacy at Los Angeles’ Urban Fitness 911, a total wellness program that offer fitness, nutrition and life coaching to low income children, lives on. The Urban Fitness 911 team is opening its first live-in housing program for struggling young women and will be named ‘The Toni Kohn House” in honor of Toni’s dedication to help others.

As jewelry designer, leopard print and sparkles were two of Toni’s favorite things, hence the past weekend’s Leopard Print Gala was the perfect theme for raising money for The Toni Kohn Woodward Foundation. The party was held at Telus Convention Centre in Calgary. More than 700 guests attended this event, most dressed in leopard print or leopard print accented attire. There was no shortage of food, cocktails and entertainment. With the incredible live and silent auction items (such as bedazzled spin bikes, and there was even a signed Tom Brady jersey!) and everyone’s overwhelming support, the gala had raised $1.3M to set up a Toni Kohn House in Calgary to help the city’s young women at risk. Awesome!!

Binzento x CrossIron Mills Savings Secrets Style Panel: Fall Black & White Prints

Binzento x CrossIron Mills
Savings Secrets Style Panel: Fall Black & White Prints
(photographed by: April)
Black vs. white, dark vs. light, rebellious vs. innocent…some forever classic and timeless elements of juxtapositions. I remembered visiting one of my besties’ closets and all she has is ‘black and white’ color clothing. For my friend, minimalism defines her style, and she prefers not letting overly stimulating colors taking away the focus of the silhouettes of her clothes. For me on the other hand, mix & matching black and white shapes and prints can be complex process, and when done correctly it results a visually striking piece of art.

For the latest fall season of CrossIron Mills Savings Secrets Style Panel, I’ve selected black and white prints style. Combining my own spin of personal taste and inspirations from Phlipp Plein’s FW15 sport-appeal looks, I’ve used intricate print patterns in multi-layers format. Adding knitwear to the overall look spotlighted the coming many festivities of fall and winter season. You can get this entire look for less than $250 at CrossIron Mills:
What I wore:

Jersey and hoodie: Urban Planet
Knit over-garment: Bluenotes
Graphic sport trouser: KIXS

Black and white may sound dull to some of you, but by pairing the right patterns and prints and mix and match unique silhouettes, you can easily pull off an edgy look without being too over the top. Add texturized black leather jacket can also elevate a daring persona.

The Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards 2016 – Calling for Fashion Innovators!

The Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards 2016
Calling for Fashion Innovators!

Celebrating Canadian fashion industry, the 3rd annual Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards (CAFA) is closing in, scheduled to take place on April 15, 2015 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel Toronto. Recognizing rising and established stars, CAFA remains steadfast in its mandate to generate a stronger appreciation and market for Canadian fashion talent both in Canada and around the world.

CAFA 2016 is really focusing on self and peer nomination and recognition. As I’ve been urging my talented colleagues to apply for the Emerging Talent in Fashion and Accessories categories, CAFA has established two more self-nominating categories this year: The Fashion Innovation Award - To be presented to a company that is innovating how we experience, consume or interact with fashion through technology. This can include companies who are doing innovative fashion apps, wearable technology or great e-commerce platforms, and The Fashion Impact Award - To be presented to a Canadian designer or brand that has made a significant social or philanthropic impact in the Canadian and/or international community.  Though the application deadline for The Fashion Impact Award has passed, the Fashion Innovation Award is still accepting applicants and candidates until 5:00pm EST, October 23rd. I know many of you who have been developing wearable technologies such as the participants from MAKE Fashion would be the perfect candidates for this award. APPLY NOW via this link: http://www.cafawards.ca/submissionSelfNominating.php#innovation

Winners of the Emerging Talents in Fashion & Accessories categories will receive $10,000, mentorship by industry leaders, and gain national and international exposure and recognition.

Other newly added categories this year, The Fresh Face of the Year Award calls for modeling agencies to send in their best fresh faces to the executive committee. Similarly, the process for the Fashion Design Student Award calls on schools to apply on behalf of the students they would like to nominate. Headed by Vicky Milner and Brittney Kuczynski, the CAFA gala has stood out as one of the most dazzling events of the season. Last year’s notable attendees included Vanguard award winner and host Joe Zee, presenters Fashion Police’s Brad Goreski, actress Elisha Cuthbert, models Coco Rocha and Chantelle Winnie with a special video appearance from Olivia Palermo. CAFA has awarded fashion powerhouses including Dean and Dan Caten of DSquared2, Erdem Moralioglu of Erdem, Marie Saint Pierre and Phillippe Dubuc as well as up and coming Canadian designers Sid Neigum and Chloe and Parris Gordon of Beaufille who won the Swarovski Awards for Emerging Talent, for Fashion and Accessories respectively.

Vicky Milner, managing director, CAFA, adds, “We want to recognize and reward the hard work of our peers. With the addition of four new self-nominating categories, we want CAFA to include a diverse a group of Canadian designers and professionals. Making the nominations more accessible will help raise awareness for our remarkable home-grown talent and generate broader international recognition for Canadian fashion industry leaders.”

“Canada has a thriving and innovative fashion scene,” says Brittney Kuczynski, founding director, CAFA. “With consumer’s relentless desire for great and new product in the vastly evolving global retail landscape; our goal is to help foster the next generation of Canadian, international designers. We look forward to showcasing how culturally important the fashion industry is to Canada at our upcoming event”.

Binzento Journal: PARKluxe 2015 Recap

Binzento Journal
PARKluxe 2015 Recap
(photos by: Binzento)
It was another great season of PARKluxe, Calgary’s largest running fashion event that showcases both established and emerging Canadian fashion designers. Amidst the fashion week season, it was certainly a good time to embrace and celebrate the talents that we have locally. In addition to long time PARK favorites Caitlin Power, Paul Hardy, Malorie Urbanovitch and Laura Siegel, this season’s fashion show had introduced some newcomers to PARKluxe runway such as House of Nonie, Travis Taddeo, and Eliza Faulkner to the designer roster.

Presented by Bankers Hall, this year PARKluxe again took advantage of the Calgary’s latest hip location, East Village by Bow River, beside the historic Simmons Building. The usual long program didn’t seem to be a drag at all. In fact, with the interesting trunk show vendors including Malika, Paul Hardy, Travis Taddeo, Caitlin Power and Kate Hewko and well engaged VIP section where I got to mingle with some of my closest friends in this city, the evening was actually well entertained. My favorite collections of the evening were House of Nonie, Malorie Urbanovitch and Travis Taddeo. The easily distinguishable aesthetics stood out overall during the show.

It is evident that the PARK team has taken our past feedbacks into consideration, making this event only better than the last. Congratulations to them on the success of PARKluxe 2015, and the city is good to have a Canadian-design focus organization that continues to provide the platform for fashion talents to express their work in western Canada.
