One of Canada’s oldest retailers, The Hudson’s Bay Company is partnering with the Toronto International Film Festival® (TIFF) for the fifth year in a row, as the Official Fashion Retailer and as an Official Red Carpet Sponsor. From Thursday, September 10 to Sunday, September 20, Hudson’s Bay’s signature stripes will transform the carpets at three of the Festival’s key venues – Roy Thomson Hall, Ryerson Theatre and TIFF Bell Lightbox.
As a proud Canadian company we believe in supporting premier events like the Toronto International Film Festival, which has elevated the film industry in Canada and promoted Canada as a cultural leader to the international community,” said Liz Rodbell, president, Hudson's Bay. “We are especially excited to partner with the world-renowned festival this year, on its 40th anniversary.”

We are grateful to Hudson's Bay for their ongoing support of the Festival,” said Cameron Bailey, artistic director of the Toronto International Film Festival. “We look forward to celebrating our 40th Festival with this iconic Canadian brand and leader in the fashion world."

The red carpet sets the perfect stage for fashion. As an Official Red Carpet Sponsor, “Stars on Stripes” press alerts will reveal the hottest red carpet looks as talent walk the Hudson’s Bay carpets at this year’s Festival.

“Expect to see deepened jewel tones such as emerald and teal, and black reinvented with eye-catching embellishments and sheer inserts, on the red carpet this Festival,” said Suzanne Timmins, senior vice president and fashion director, Hudson's Bay. “At Hudson’s Bay, whether you’re a star or style-conscious consumer, you will be able to find your ultimate festival fashion that is carpet-worthy.”

To further celebrate this year’s Festival, Hudson’s Bay has partnered with Entertainment One and Bleecker Street for a special presentation of the highly-anticipated biopic Trumbo starring Bryan Cranston, Diane Lane, Louis C.K., Elle Fanning, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Helen Mirren, and directed by Jay Roach and written by John McNamara. The screening will take place at the Elgin Theatre, followed by a stylish post-premiere cocktail party with the cast.

CrossIron Mills x Binzento: Savings Secret For Back To School Style

CrossIron Mills x Binzento
Savings Secret For Back To School Style
I don’t’ recall if I’ve ever written a blog post about “Back To School” style. I do however remembered that time when I was still a poor student, refreshing my wardrobe was probably the last thing I had in mind for the new semester. And now that I’m a 32-year old, this becomes even a lesser concern or relevant. But hey, if you ask me what my savings secret is and my take on uber stylish back-to-school styles, I definitely have some ideas.

Continuing my collaboration with Alberta’s premium shopping outlet CrossIron Mills and as a member of the ‘Savings Secret’ Style Panel, below are my picks for this season – Getting the entire look at CrossIron Mills for just under $200:
The look:
Athletic top: Joe Fresh
Graphic shorts: Adidas
Footwear: Puma
Dr. Who socks: Murdawg Apparel
Puppy pochette: Air & Ocean Import

Fashion in active wear has come a long way. It is no longer clothes just for somebody who's actually engaging in sports. We see that many fashion houses have dapped into creating collections inspired by the concept of athleticism - athletically inspired designs that can be worn in or out of the game. Especially for the gents, edgy sport looks have flourished the street style community. Take it from designs like Philipp Plein, Moschino, Givenchy or Moncler.

Revival of 90’s pop culture is also strong recently (funny that I was once a 90’s child and everything is seemingly so familiar), with illustrations, cartoons and icons from that era blooming in ready-to-wear as dramatic prints. Boys of this modern age have the chance to experience the culture of the 90’s, while some of us get to relive them.

Most of us will not be spending a ton of money on expensive clothes (remember the poor student scenario). To achieve that sport-edgy look ready for back to school – My pick this season is to go for sportswear such as Adidas, Nike and Puma. All of them have really evolved from ‘traditional’ sports attire to making modern athletic fashion statements. For basic cutting and minimalistic approach, you can also try Joe Fresh (we love to support Canadian designs). Don’t be shy to mix-and-match with accessories that have the 90s signature written all over them. It is a new school year after all, so make it fun, playful and vibrant!

OPEN CALL: CAFA Introduces Emerging Fashion Fridays

OPEN CALL: CAFA Introduces Emerging Fashion Fridays
The Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards (CAFA) has recently launched its Emerging Fashion Fridays spotlight series, which dedicates to support new talent in the field of fashion design. Currently they are having an open call - welcoming new fashion designers across the nation to apply for a chance to be featured in this series.

Every week, one up-and-coming rising star will be spotlighted in the Emerging Fashion Fridays, which highlights the designer’s work and story. I do think this is a pivotal component for the future success of our Canadian fashion industry and certainly a great opportunity that allows young talents to gain exposure and awareness. Featured designers are also given a platform to express their work in text and gallery to showcase their collections.

For a chance to be in the Emerging Fashion Fridays spotlight, send your biography, and a copy of your most recent lookbook to: You can also visit for more information.

August Activity: Kensington Summertime Outdoor Movies!!!

August Activity: Kensington Summertime Outdoor Movies!!!
As we are approaching the end of…(bites tongue)…summer, things have definitely slowed down a little in the city. Away from the July madness which for some of you may include: bull riding, grinding at the Cowboys tent or drunk parade on 17th Ave, perhaps it’s time to wind down and find some activities that allow you to ‘chillax’. Kensington YYC partners with Calgary Parking Authority, Truck Gallery and the Calgary International Film Festival to present Kensington Summertime Outdoor Movies for the month of August! Starting August 8th until August 29th, every Saturday evening in Kensington, favorite local and regional films are played. All you need to bring is a chair~~ Movie snacks will be complementary thanks to ATB Financial, but no one is going to stop you if you want to bring you own popcorn or maybe a roast chicken of course.

“We are thrilled to have such an amazing lineup of local and regional talent! These films present a variety of content and each provokes thought – they are interesting, humorous, engaging and representational depictions of the communities we live in”, says Annie MacInnis, Executive Director of the Kensington BRZ.

It’s a great idea to spend a chill Saturday evening with your date. Come say hi if you catch me on one of those weekends! Here are more details to the films and schedule:

When: 9pm: August 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th – Come sit back and enjoy amazing and thought provoking visual content amongst neighbours and friends.

Where: Kensington Summertime Outdoor Movies will be held at the Calgary Parking Authority Lot 57 – located at 1210 Kensington Rd. NW.

Film Schedule:

Saturday August 8: Radiant City by Gary Burns and Jim Brown – SPONSORED BY ATB FINANCIAL • Gary Burns, Canada’s king of surreal comedy, joins Jim Brown on an outing to craft a vivid account of life in the late suburban age. The film has been awarded a Genie Award for Best Documentary.

Binzento's Journal: Dîner en Blanc YYC 2015

Binzento's Journal
Dîner en Blanc YYC 2015
(photos by: Binzento)
YYC’s third annual Dîner en Blanc was successfully held last week at a “secret” location just a few blocks away from Eau Claire Market, right next to the Peace Bridge. Fortunately the weather was beautiful and sunny, we could leave all of our rain-protection gear in the car and have one less thing to carry. And thank God we didn’t have to walk 10 miles this time (I can live walking 5 blocks while carrying 30 lbs of stuff). How I wish though that it was on the other-side of the bridge on Memorial Drive and not beside a construction site.

The all-white-themed dinner party should be a fine spectacle – I wonder if anyone living in the condos near by took any photos from high above. At least as far as I know there was a drone stalking us the whole time, which makes me think whether I was on my best behavior and not done anything embarrassing.

Dîner en Blanc is a French-tradition, but knowing Calgary we’ll always add a little twist. Several art installations can be seen on site. Sadly they were only on one side of the dining area. Where I was sitting would have no clue of the art displays unless I walk over. I’m happy where I was sitting though….next to the alcohol table.

My most favorite part of this year’s experience was perhaps the special performance by The Wet Secrets! I really like this band and their songs, and it was one of the things that got me excited when I found out that they were playing at Dîner en Blanc this year. Their custom-made, white version band costume was the cutest thing ever!

Mercedes-Benz Start Up Embarks On Cross Country Tour To Discover Next Awarded Designer

Mercedes-Benz Start Up Embarks On Cross Country Tour To Discover Next Awarded Designer
Designer presentations planned in Montreal, Toronto and Calgary
Now in its fifth year, Mercedes-Benz Start Up (MBSU) - Canada’s premier program for emerging fashion designers - will begin its nationwide search for fashion’s next generation with visits to Montreal on August 12 and 13; Thornhill, Ont. on August 17 and 18; and Calgary on August 20 and 21.
Designers looking to take home the coveted title of Awarded Designer must have a registered Canadian business that has been operating for less than five years and should have sold to market at minimum, one commercial collection. Top applicants are selected to present their designs and business plans to a panel of judges comprised of industry experts.
“We’re excited to be celebrating our fifth year searching for emerging designers across Canada,” said JoAnne Caza, director of communications and PR at Mercedes-Benz Canada. “Canada has such remarkably talented designers and we’ve enjoyed watching our alumni show collections on the runway in Toronto and build their businesses nationwide.”
The Mercedes-Benz Start Up judging panel includes: JoAnne Caza, director of communications and public relations at Mercedes-Benz Canada, Robin Kay, president at Fashion Design Council of Canada, Carolyn Quinn, director at IMG Fashion, Kara Chomistek, president at PARK, Caroline Gault, Alberta editor at FASHION Magazine, Jacquelyn Francis, Montreal executive editor at FASHION Magazine, Caitlan Moneta, Toronto fashion market editor at FASHION Magazine and Olga Koel, fashion industry consultant.

After their presentations, five designers from each city will be chosen to showcase their looks during exclusive semi-final runway shows at regional Mercedes-Benz dealerships in front of top media, tastemakers and fashion industry elite. The selected finalists from each market will participate in a group finale runway show at World MasterCard Fashion Week in October 2015 where the judges will name an Awarded Designer. The recipient will receive year-round intensive mentoring from the panel of experts, an editorial feature in FASHION Magazine, a fully produced solo runway show at World MasterCard Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2016 in March 2016, and a $30,000 bursary.

Past Awarded Designers MARTIN LIM, DUY, Malorie Urbanovitch, Cécile Raizonville of Matière Noire and Sid Neigum have received international accolades and enjoyed exclusive benefits and opportunities through the Mercedes-Benz Start Up program. All semi-finalists and finalists automatically become part of a Canadian network of alumni who have access to the Mercedes-Benz Start Up mentors.
