MAKE Fashion Show and Gala 2.0

MAKE Fashion Show and Gala 2.0
Connecting Technology and Fashion

Something I should've posted sooner, but couldn't due to the intense schedule last week. The 2nd annual MAKE Fashion Show and Gala which happened recently at the WestJet campus in Calgary had given me a whole new perspective about the fashion scene in this city.

By combining the efforts of engineers, technologists and fashion designers, a collection of innovative wearable art was created and showcased at the latest edition of MAKE Fashion. One of the highlights this year was the invitation of international designers from London (Rainbow Winters), Tokyo (Erina Kashihara) and Hong Kong (Dr. Patricia Flanagan) to participate.

It's a one of a kind fashion gala in Calgary, where tech savy and artistic individuals could unite and focus on the same vision. In addition the the spectacular pieces by the international teams, our local emerging talents were equally amazing. (You can view the list of emerging talents and their respective work HERE).

My picks of the evening were: team Catherine Hazin, Kelly Hofer and Dianne Gibson's romantic wedding gown made of fibre optic and 3D printing technology. Team Elle Nguyen and Aman Dhalay of Javeda's Asian cultivated "Dragon dress" was also remarkable. The classic East Indian design-inspired garment was technologically elevated with the installation of a sensor remote-controlled robotic dragon, monitored by a program through iPad. Returning team Kyle Nylund, Tony Grimes and Shawn Ayerst provided a new insight of using various hard edge materials including glass, fabric, fiberoptics and LED light to create a dress that was seemingly delicate and elegant.

As co-founder of MAKE Fashion Shannon Hoover said, there is a growing market for wearable technology. It's interesting to see a small city such as Calgary has made its mark in this field internationally, and I am amazed with the talents and work that were showcased at this event. There is no doubt in my mind that next year MAKE Fashion Show and Gala will expand, and I look forward to its future events to come.

Special thanks to pal Odessa Bennett for the invitation to this event.
