JUNO Week 2014, which ended last night with the award broadcast at the MTS Centre Winnipeg Manitoba was one hell of  show. I had an opportunity to be a part of this annual event celebrating music talents of Canada. If you've stay tuned on Fairchild Radio FM94.7, you may have heard about my coverage of the JUNO Awards. I've also had the priviledge to provide my insights to Fairchild Radio this time.
Great performances selection this year with Serena Ryder x Classified (both also co-hosts for this year's JUNO Awards along with Johnny Reid), Tegan and Sara x Choir! Choir! Choir!, Walk off the Earth x Red Robe Women's Drum Society, Sarah McLachlan and my favorite Canadian band One Republic.
Tegan and Sara, swooping three awards this year including the Group of the Year, Single of the Year and Pop Album of the Year Award was the biggest winner. Serena Ryder took home the Artist of the Year Award, while Arcade Fire was honored with the Album of the Year Award.
Justin Beiber, not surprisingly, won the Fan Choice Award. We could hear crowds at the MTS Centre "booed" when it was announced by the presenters, who were the 2014 Sochi Olympics Women's Curling Team gold medalists. While the ladies expressed their support of Justin Beiber during media interview, Tegan and Sara also showed their support of Beiber saying that he has the talent in pop music. They expressed fairness to Beiber's recent negative publicity saying that they've also done "stupid sh*ts", just that it was "before they were famous".
My favorite performance of the evening was by Walk off the Earth performing "Gang of Rhythm" with the Red Robe Women's Drum Soceity. Their styles, the sound, the beat and the stage lighting together were spectacular.

Though originally scheduled Robin Thicke's performance was cancelled, One Republic's "Counting Stars" was equally, if not, more entertaining. Another excitment for me was the appearance of space Commander Chris Hadfield introducing Bachman Turner Overdrive as the recepient of this year's JUNO Canadian Hall of Fame. Commander Hadfield talked about the tracks he played while in space, and the songs he recorded while orbiting the Earth.
The broadcast night only awarded six of the JUNO Awards. Most of the awards were given the night prior at the JUNO dinner award gala, hosted by CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi. Highlights of that portion of the night were Dean Brody winning the Country Album of the Year, Albertan Brett Kissel earning the Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Matt Mays Rock Album of the Year, Christine Jenseon Contempoary Jazz Album of the Year, Ron Sexsmith Adult Alternative Album of the Year, JRDN & Kardinal Offishall R&B/Soul Recording of the Year, Trevor Guthrie Dance Recording of the Year, and Ryan Hemsworth Electronic Album of the Year.
I was glad to see Hemsworth won the Electronic Album of the Year. A huge lover of Japanese culture (including Pokemon :)), Jpop has been one of the influences to his music. When I asked him what the thinks of the recent explosion of Kpop culture, Hemsworth said he has yet to discover them. He is certainly interested to explore Kpop when he is given the time.
Finally much respect to husband and wife Canadian musicians Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida for accepting the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award for their contributions to War Child organization. They've set great examples to all Canadians the meaning of compassion, lending a hopeful hand to people struggling to survive and giving them the love that everyone deserves.

JUNO is now over, we'll have to wait again until next year where it will be held in Hamilton Ontario.
