motionball 2014 - A "BRIGHTER" Gala, A Smarter Choice

motionball "BRIGHTER" Gala 2014
Calgarians are known for their genorsity and activeness partaking philanthropic work. At the midst of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, it's also the time to celebrate our heoric Special Olympians who strife to overcome obstacles and achieve success as athletes.

motionball's annual fundraiser gala in support of The Special Olympics Canada Foundation will be happening this Friday, February 28th at Flames Central Calgary. One of the biggest fundraiser events in Canada, the proceeds collected at the gala ensures long term financial integrity of the Special Olympics in Canada and to fund the training of our Special Olympians for competition, as well as volunteer growth.

This year's theme, "BRIGHTER", signifies our support of the Special Olympics is a smart (bright) choice. Personally I think this title also connects to bringing a "brighter" future for our champions at the Special Olympics. With this theme, guests are asked to dress their best with splash of bright colors in their formal attires.

Some of highlights at this year's BRIGHTER gala include a fashion show, silent auction, live music and dance performances, special guests appearance and of course delicious hors d'oeuvres and special cocktails are surely expected to be there.

Ever year the motionball connects young professionals throughout the city and giving them the opportunity to network and meet Special Olympians. The ultimate goals however are to bring awareness of the Special Olympics Canada Foundation, learn about the programs for athletes with intellectual disability, promote recruitment of volunteers and trained coaches. motionball became the world's largest movement dedicated to promoting respect, acceptance, inclusion, and human dignity for people with intellectual disability through sports. And giving them equal opportunity to excel the sports they love and enjoy. Binzento is a huge fan, as I believe this event is truly meaningful. If you are in town, be sure to purchase your tickets and check out this event to support the great cause. Tickets are available HERE

LOVE HER Honours Dr. Steven Narod with Award for Research Excellence

LOVE HER - the Fashionable Evening in Support of Ovarian Cancer
Honours Dr. Steven Narod with Award for Research Excellence

Ovarian Cancer Canada has announced that Dr. Steven Narod, a world leader in the field of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, is this year's recipient of the 2014 Karen Campbell National Award for Research Excellence.

The charity will honour Dr. Steven Narod at its annual "LOVE HER" gala on Thursday, February 27 at Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex in Toronto, the first of three fundraising galas across the country, proudly presented by CIBC.

Dr. Narod, a Toronto researcher, and his team identified founder mutations to the BRCA genes in the Ashkenazi-Jewish, French-Canadian and Bahamian populations. Dr. Narod directs one of the largest international longitudinal studies with a database of over 14,000 women who carry a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation.

"Ovarian Cancer Canada is honoured to recognize Dr. Narod's decades of international research that have deepened our understanding of hereditary ovarian cancer and moved us toward better prevention and treatment of this disease. His body of work exemplifies the very definition of the award," says Elisabeth Baugh, CEO, Ovarian Cancer Canada.

Starting in 1987, Dr. Narod studied hereditary breast cancer at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France, with Dr. Gilbert Lenoir. Dr. Narod is a co-discoverer of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, and since their discoveries in 1994 and 1995, he has studied the distribution of mutations worldwide. Women who inherit mutations to either their BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene are at increased risk for both ovarian and breast cancer.

"It's a tremendous honour to receive this award from Ovarian Cancer Canada," says Dr. Steven Narod, Director of the Familial Breast Cancer Research Unit at Women's College Hospital in Toronto, a group that focuses on hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. "Our team conducts research that has immediate consequences. One likes to think that the impact will be seen as soon as the research is out - that it will change practice and change lives."

"Finding a cure for cancer is a cause that is very close to our hearts at CIBC," says Christina Kramer, CIBC's Executive Vice-President. "We are proud to support Ovarian Cancer Canada as presenting sponsor of the LOVE HER series across the country and help recognize Dr. Steven Narod for his tremendous contributions towards better cancer prevention, treatment and care for all women."

Ovarian Cancer Canada is also delighted to announce that Robert Herjavec, a current Shark on ABC's Shark Tank and a former Dragon on CBC's Dragon's Den, is the Honourary Chair of LOVE HER 2014 galas.
The first of three LOVE HER events takes place in Toronto on February 27 at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex, with hosts Beverly Thomson and  Marci Ien of Canada AM. The event will feature a haute fashion show by Toronto fashion destination, Andrews, a live auction by Canadian speaker, host, and award-winning creative director Ron Titeand a stunning performance by chanteuse, Divine Brown. Along with the fireman's raffle and fabulous assortment of silent auction items, guests are encouraged to bid high and to raise generous donations in the fight against ovarian cancer.
The second event will be held in Calgary at Hotel Arts on March 6, with co-hosts Jessica Holmesand Diane Francis keeping the crowd entertained alongside the musical stylings of Sophie Serafino and a stunning fashion show by local womenswear boutique OOH LA LA. The third will be in Vancouver on May 28 at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel, where guests will enjoy stunning panoramic views while enjoying a fashion show, live auction and more.
Tickets for all three events are currently available for purchase at www.love-her.ca

17,000 women in Canada currently live with ovarian cancer. LOVE HER pays tribute to these women by helping to raise awareness of one of the most overlooked and under-diagnosed of women's cancers. There is no screening test for ovarian cancer and the often late detection of this disease results in a shocking five-year survival rate of less than 30 per cent. Join the spectacular LOVE HER event to celebrate women, raise awareness and support the vital work of Ovarian Cancer Canada.
