Emerging Talent Part 2 of 4: SHENGYI

Scouting emerging talents at White Milano Show wasn't one of the easiest tasks, as the trade show was afterall a market place for fashion business dominated by showrooms and retailers. Then I came across SHENGYI, a Qingdao-born, Paris-based emerging fashion designer. Graduated from STUDIO BERÇOT in Paris in 2010, he had previoulsy worked in the studios of well known designers including Thomas Engal Hart, Rick Owens, and Bruno Pieters. Perhaps these mentors have a certain degree of influence in his current task of launching his own label. One could find the beauty of minimalism, and a dark humor approach to express his vision. SHENGYI believes that fashion is (one of) an important media to express personal emotions. His latest FW14/15 RTW "Cohesion-Looming" pertains a dark theme, where it focuses on long-coats, tops, trousers in different shades of grey. Each can be seen carefully crafted with simple cut, neat lines and subtle details. Also perhaps I felt closer to home meeting SHENGYI and his team, as myself spoke the same language as they do, hence it was natural to feel a connection with the collection. There is, without a doubt, a potential to attract fans between the continents of Europe and Asia.
