YYC Celebrates 4th Annual Motionball On February 22nd

NEVER - A Motionball Gala 2013

Fabulous events are coming one after another here in Calgary (YYC) this month. The one I look forward to the most is the annual Motionball Gala for the Special Olympics Canada, which is happening this Friday at the Flames Central.
The Motionball started in Toronto in 2001 by three brothers Mark, Sean and Paul Etherington who have been aligned with the Special Olympics Canada since childhood. The motive was to drive awareness of the Special Olympics Canada, and encourage Canadians to support and donate to help fund this organization. Special Olympics Canada is a registered Canadian charity since 1969, helping intellectually disabled athletes by providing them the physical, mental, and emotional supports, and funding them to travel abroad to compete.
The organization also gives the special athletes the stepping stone to community integration and new sense of belonging. The Motionball Gala, now have grown into 14 events across Canada, creates a bridge to allow donors to connect with the special Olympians. "The Motionball serves three functions: Educate, Integrate and Celebrate" said Paul Horton, organizer of the gala. "We want to educate the general audience about the difference between paralympics vs special Oympics: While paralympics connects to athletes with physical disability, and special Olympics dedicates to athletes with intellectual disability. We also want to integrate different personalities, and interact with supporters. Finally, we want to celebrate all the achievements we had as an organization, and from our heart warming donors."
This year's Motionball Gala's theme is called NEVER. "The word NEVER seems to have a negative connotation, but in fact it has a yin and yang factor, for example: we can say NEVER GIVE UP." said Paul Horton. "Many of our special athletes never thought that they could do it before, but they've overcome so much and ultimately achieve success".
Throughout the evening, there will be a special presentation by Canadian ex-footballer, bobsledder Jesse Lumsden, mixology bar sponsored by Model Milk, performances by IllFX Dance Crew and Live DJs Sratch Bastid and Drum n' DJ. Also be expected to see special guests including speed skating special Olympic athlete Katie Saunders and Calgary Flames players Derek Smith, Curtis Glencross and more. The Motionball is 100% volunteer based. The gala is expected to raise $600K nationwide, and hoping to reach $70K in YYC, all devoted to fund the Special Olympics Canada. Tickets are on sale via Binzento Vincente will be attending this event, so I hope to see some of you there :).
